Despite endorsements from Ted Hughes, Charles Simic and (the ever-tasteful) me, Vasko Popa remains one of the lesser-known European poets. It’s somewhat devastating, since this collection is pretty mesmerizing. Evoking his Serbian roots, Popa deftly blends personal anecdotes with mythic drama and surrealist fables. All on its own, The Little Box series promises to delight.
