Being trapped in a mental institution for months when you’re reasonably sane would be enough to drive you crazy in truth. Pepper, the institutionalized hero of Victor LaValle’s third novel, The Devil in Silver, is also treated to visions of a menacing bison-headed demon. Critics have already heaped praise on LaValle’s latest work of literary horror, which combines spooky madhouse antics with keen social critique. LaValle is the acting fiction director at Columbia University and a former Guggenheim fellow. His writing has obtained a number of honors, including the PEN Open Book Award, the Shirley Jackson Award, the American Book Award, and others.
