Winner of the MACK First Book Award, Hayahisa Tomiyasu, spent five years photographing a ping-pong table – or ‘tisch tennis platte’ – from the window of his former student apartment in the German city of Leipzig. His resulting photobook TTP is a droll, beguiling observation of locals and wanderers alike using the green table for a plethora of purposes – bar table tennis. A laundry counter, a sun lounger, a sanctuary from the city, the table allows Hayahisa to document the kaleidoscopic idiosyncrasies of social habits and human behaviour as seasons change, scenes mutate, and people come and go.
Based between Leipzig and Zurich, Hayahisa will be in New York on Saturday 22 September to present the genesis of the project – featuring a wandering fox – and to elucidate some of his photographs, followed by book signing. Please join him for an evening to celebrate the U.S. launch of the book at McNally Jackson Williamsburg, an event coinciding with the New York Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1.
