In the next of McNally Jackson’s events in partnership with the NYRB Classics, Daniel Mendelsohn will discuss Augustus, the third of Stoner author John Williams’ great late novels. The book’s subject—a departure from the distinctly American preoccupations of Williams’ other works—is the life and history-changing career of the first emperor of Rome, Augustus, which The Financial Times describes as combining “extraordinary range” and “extraordinary minuteness.” Mendelsohn will be joined in conversation by Adrian Goldsworthy, whose biography Augustus: From Revolutionary to Emperor will be just out from Yale University Press.
