Jessica Love, author and illustrator of the amazing Julián is a Mermaid, is teaming up with Drag Queen Story Hour for a fabulous Saturday event at McNally Jackson. "This is Jessica Love’s debut picture book, and every choice she makes—the spare text, a color palette both muted and lively, full-bleed pages that make even subway cars and apartment rooms feel as expansive as the ocean—imbues the story with charm, tenderness and humor. . . . Alongside Julián, readers learn that anyone can be a mermaid: All it takes is love and acceptance, a little imagination and a big swishy tail." (The New York Times Book Review) Jessica Love is an illustrator and Broadway actress. She has a BA in studio art from the University of California, Santa Cruz, as well as a graduate degree from Juilliard. "Drag Queen Story Hour is just what it sounds like: drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores across the country. DQSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models . . . kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish, where dress up is real." Jessica and Drag Queen Story Hour stars will read to kids, lead an interactive q and a, and help kids express their own ideas of glamour using brilliant and exciting art materials. Hosted by Yvonne Brooks. All ages welcome. Free.
