Campus thrillers have always been around--and, judging by the enduring popularity of The Secret History, have always scratched an aesthetic itch. But recent years have seen a boom in the subgenre, as well as the rise of the so-called "dark academia" aesthetic. Why now? Is it just a generation of disenchanted Harry Potter readers, all grown up? What comforts does Dark Academia offer during dark times--and how does it continue to unsettle those comforts?
