We're thrilled to welcome the uber-talented artist and author Ohara Hale to a special Tuesday afterschool event in Williamsburg. Ohara is launching her fantastic new book, Be Still, Life, today, with us! Ohara is going to read Be Still, Life (Enchanted Lion Books), then help kids create their own unique, three-dimensional still lives. Hosted by Yvonne Brooks. All ages welcome; great for ages 3 to 8. Free.
Ohara Hale is a multi-disciplinary, self-taught artist who works with many different forms and materials. She sings, writes, draws, and performs sounds, words, colors, and movements that are questions and ideas about love, life, nature, and all the unseen, unknown, and dreamed in between. Hale lives on planet Earth with her rescue dog, Banana. Years ago, she put googly eyes on the food in her fridge and the fruit in her bowl, creating unusual still lives that winked and grinned and surprised many a house guest searching for a snack. Born in Hollywood, California, she now lives in Montreal, Quebec. Ohara loves all creatures, including spiders and snakes!
"The rambunctiously designed illustrations of bugs, plants, fruit, snails, and other aspects of the natural world are done in simple, warm, unshaded colors and black crayonlike outlines that echo and support the narrative’s ingenuousness, as does the hand-lettered text. It doesn’t take itself too seriously—some segments are endearingly silly, especially the asides of some of the critters voicing their opinions. What sets this book apart from so many others with the same theme of the nourishment derived from connecting with life is its infectious joy, delivered simply and sincerely." — STARRED REVIEW, Kirkus Reviews
