Billed as an “existential murder mystery,” Norah Labiner‘s fourth novel isconsuming. Like Gone Girl, it's an exercise in narrative unreliability.Labiner's fictive world is lush with scandal, violence, and glamour. Allof the tantalizing ingredients of a solid mystery are present: bloodyknives, houses on fire, a body buried in the snow. But unlike many murdermysteries, this novel pushes well beyond the conventions of its genre: itis also a modernist experiment in the novel-as-verse form and ameta-fictional health hazard. A good choice for fans of Jeanette Wintersonor Carole Maso who want something a bit juicier, or readers of Tana Frenchand Gillian Flynn who want something more lyrical.
