This is the tragically ill-fated love story of Zou Lei, an illegal Uighur immigrant and Skinner, an Iraq war-addled veteran, whose lives run parallel and collide on the crowded streets and underground malls of Flushing, Queens. Their problems become each other’s problems, and become too large for them to handle, alluding to the smallness one feels amidst the legality and surveillance of post-9/11 America. Lish writes athletically about violence, physicality, and the need for understanding. As intense as it is, it's not without its funny moments of relieving familiarity. I really laughed hard. In its bullish final hour, this novel left me considering the American Dream, and the tender, desperate experience of those whose lives are determined by its epic failure.

— Angelina

Zou Lei, orphan of the desert, migrates to work in America and finds herself slaving in New York's kitchens. She falls in love with a young man whose heart has been broken in another desert. A new life may be possible if together they can survive homelessness, lockup, and the young man's nightmares, which may be more prophecy than madness.
