Staff Reviews

Irene, as she was known when she was known during her life and career, was one of those playwrights perpetually ahead of her time. But beneath all the experimentation and void-iness of her work is a thread undeniable humanity. Don’t be put off by the fact that Fefu and Her Friends, Fornes’ most famous play, isn’t in this collection—all the spatial, temporal, and political risks of that play find their ways into these four in ways that continue to shock me every time I read, and reread, and watch, and rewatch. If making a play is a process of world-building, here are a few entirely different planets to get lost on, with Fornes as your funny, weird demiurge.
