S/N: NewWorldPoetics is a quarterly journal dedicated to the poetries of the Americas and to South/North [S/N] dialog. In each issue we will publish poetry and poetics in English or Spanish translation, introducing North American readers to Latin American poetry and vice versa. Our commitment is to a poetics of invention and exploration. This also defines our approach to translation, which we see not as an expedient but as an art form in itself.S/N will present work that challenges received conventions about poetry and poetics - but not necessarily in the predictable ways of the avant-garde, bohemian, or dissident. The poetry and poetics we present is meant to open up new understandings of poetic invention and formal exploration, in works that are as wild and unpredictable as Our Americas.  

S/N: NewWorldPoetics es una revista cuatrimestral dedicada a la poesía y poéticas de las Américas, como asimismo a promover el diálogo entre Sur y Norte [S/N]. En cada número publicaremos poemas y poéticas en traducción al inglés o español, presentando a los lectores de Norte América la poesía de América Latina, y viceversa. Nuestro compromiso es con las poéticas de invención y exploración. Esto también define nuestra concepción de la traducción, a la cual no vemos como una simple mediadora sino como una forma de arte por sí misma. S/N presentará obras que desafían las convenciones pre-existentes sobre la poesía, aunque no necesariamente a la manera predecible de las vanguardias, la bohemia, o la disidencia. La poesía y poéticas que publicaremos están pensadas y concebidas para inaugurar nuevos entendimientos de la invención poética y de la exploración formal, en obras que son tan salvajes e impredecibles como Nuestras Américas.

Charles Bernstein Charles Bernstein was born in New York in 1950. He has published over twenty collections of poetry and three collections of essays, including Girly Man and My Way: Speeches and Poems and With Strings, from the University of Chicago Press, Republics of Reality: Poems 1975-1995, from Sun & Moon Press, Shadowtime, from Green Integer, and Blind Witness: Three American Operas, from Factory School. All the Whiskey in Heaven: Selected Poems was published this year, from Farrar, Straus and Giroux. From 1978-1981 he co-edited, with Bruce Andrews.L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E magazine. In the 1990s, he co-founded and directed the Poetics Program at the State University of New York ¯ Buffalo. Bernstein is the co-director of PennSound (writing.upenn.edu/pennsound) and editor of the Electronic Poetry Center (epc.buffalo.edu). Bernstein is Donald T. Regan Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Pennsylvania.

Ha publicado más de veinte colecciones de poesía y tres colecciones de ensayo, incluyendo Girly Man y My Way: Speeches and Poems y With Strings, de University of Chicago Press,Republics of Reality: Poems 1975-1995, de Sun & Moon Press, Shadowtime, de Green Integer, y Blind Witness: Three American Operas, de Factory School. All the Whisky in Heaven: Selected Poems salió esta año, de Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Entre 1978-1981, co-editaba, junto a Bruce Andrews, la revista L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E. Durante los años noventa, co-fundó y dirigía el Poetics Program at the State University of New York – Buffalo. Bernstein es co-director de PennSound (writing.upenn.edu/pennsound) y editor del Electronic Poetry Center (epc.buffalo.edu). Bernstein es Donald T. Regan Professor of English and Comparative Literature en la Universidad de Pennsylvania.  

Eduardo Espina was born in Montevideo, Uruguay.  He has published the books of poetry: Valores Personales (1982),La caza nupcial (1993; 1997), El oro y la liviandad del brillo (1994), Coto de casa (1995), Lee un poco más despacio(1999), Mínimo de mundo visible  (2003), and El cutis patrio (2006; 2009). He is also the author of the books of essays:El disfraz de la modernidad (1992), Las ruinas de lo imaginario (1996), La condición Milli Vanilli. Ensayos de dos siglos (2003) and Historia Universal del Uruguay (2008). He has won the Premio Nacional de Ensayo of Uruguay twice, and the Premio Municipal de Poesía. Doctoral theses and books of criticism have been written about his poetic works and his poetry has been partially translated to French, Italian, English, Portuguese, Croatian and Albanian. In 1980 he was the first Uruguayan writer invited to the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa. Since then he resides in the US. He teaches at Texas A&M University.

Eduardo Espina nació en Montevideo, Uruguay. Actualmente enseña en Texas A&M University. Publicó los libros de poesía: Valores Personales, 1982; La caza nupcial, 1993, 1997; El oro y la liviandad del brillo, 1994; Coto de casa, 1995; Lee un poco más despacio, 1999; Mínimo de mundo visible, 2003; El cutis patrio 2006,2009. También es autor de los libros de ensayo El disfraz de la modernidad, 1992; Las ruinas de lo imaginario, 1996; La condición Milli Vanilli. Ensayos de dos siglos, 2003; Historia Universal del Uruguay, 2008; y Julio Herrera y Reissig. Prohibida la entrada a los uruguayos (2010), estos tres últimos publicados por Editorial Planeta. En Uruguay ganó dos veces el Premio Nacional de Ensayo por los libros Las ruinas de lo imaginario, (1996) y Un plan de indicios (2000), de próxima aparición. En 1998 obtuvo el Premio Municipal de Poesía por el libro aún inédito Deslenguaje. Sobre su obra poética se han escrito tesis doctorales, y extensos artículos de estudio fueron publicados en reconocidas revistas académicas. En Santiago de Chile, 2003, Red Internacional del Libro publicó Con/figuración sintáctica: poesía del deslenguaje, estudio comprensivo de la obra poética de Espina realizado por el lingüista español Enrique Mallén, autor asimismo del libro Poesía del lenguaje. De T.S. Eliot a Eduardo Espina, publicado por Editorial Aldus en México, 2008. En 1980 fue el primer escritor uruguayo invitado al prestigioso International Writing Program de la Universidad de Iowa.
